Task 1: Read and investigate
Task 2: Prepare a timeline
Valen and I created this timeline!
Task 3: Which 3 periods do you like best? Explain why.
-The Renaissance and Reformation (1485-1660 CE)
I really like this period in literature due to many facts. This period took place in the late 15th, 16th, and early 17th century in Britain. I really like this period of time in history because of the changes the British monarchy overcame. I find very interesting the Early Tudor period, where Protestantism emerges and is really catching how the different writings of the time are really influenced by this. There was a writer called Edmund Spencer, which made writings and poems about the British Monarchy at that time. As I really enjoy the history of this period of time, I find very interesting to see it in literature.
– The Victorian Period and the 19th Century (1832-1901 CE)
I also like this period in literature, the Victorian Period. I really enjoy investigating and knowing about the British monarchy that’s why I really like and consider the leadership of Queen Victoria as a key event in history. In queen Victoria’s reign we can see a lot of sentimental novels; also the movement of aestheticism emerged which is something I really like. In aestheticism they centered on the doctrine that art exists for the sake of its beauty alone, and that it didn’t have to serve or follow a political purpose. I really like this idea of writing and creating art for the sake of it, to do what inspires you, to write about feelings and emotions, with no other purpose than to create art. An author that I love about this period is Charles Dickens which wrote a book I used to read with my grandmother called “Moby Dick”.
-The Modern Period (1914-1945 CE)
Finally, another period in literature I love is the modern period. I really love it as I read some works of authors that I like from this period of time like Wilfred Owen and Virginia Woolf. Last year we analysed in our literature class, a poem by Wilfred Owen call “Dulce et Decorum Est”; I loved this poem and how vividly the author conveys the atrocities he had to endure during war. Besides, another author that I love a lot from this period in literature is Virginia Woolf. I read many of her books and her stories; the one I like the most is one that it’s called: “A room of one’s own”. I read it two years ago and I was fascinated with it and by the way Virginia Woolf wrote about certain topics such as feminism that where too controversial for her time. I love the freedom in which she wrote, not caring about the critics and the insults from others. I love how deep she goes through her writing, and I love how all her pieces live you a certain message, or makes you analyse your own thoughts and beliefs. Another thing that I love about this period in literature was the rise of black writers, which started to speak out their voices and fight against the unfairness they suffered. I love about this period of time that people started to fight against injustices which were considered common such us gender inequality and racism. People started to question and to change their minds about so many aspects which led to the society we are now; we can clearly see this change of thoughts and this new ideas expressed in this literary period.
